Examples Of The First Laws Of Motion

An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force, and an object in motion will remain in motion at the same speed and direction unless acted upon by an outside force.

When I balanced my pen on it's point, it held that possition for a split second before It fell over. Why? I believe this is because of Neton's first law- an object at rest will/wants to remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force. A segment of this law is Inertia, which is displayed here. Inertia states that an object will try to remain at rest until gravity takes effect (which is almost instantly).

Swinging momentum

Today at recess, I was running to the sport court to play soccer. I didnt relize it then, but now that I look back on it there was obviously a law of motion at work at the swing set.
So there was a fourth-grader rocking to-and-fro back-and-forth on a swing. She was attempting to swing withought holding on, and right in the middle of a swing she was thrown off and into the air before falling. I reason this is because of momentum. Momentum is much the same as Inertia, except they are opposites. Momentum dictates that an object in motion will/wants to remain in motion; This is the first law. It works simply enough, if an object is moving under a force it will stay moving untill there is a more dominant force present, which in this case is gravity pulling the girl down (which is why she fell and bruised her bum).

I didn't Actualy See This Happen But........... it's an example!

Basicly This explains two things- The law of Inertia and why to wear your seatbelt. The second of the two is obvious, so I'll explain the Law of Inertia and how it's relevant here.
Well, this is quite simmilar to the Swing Momentum above this. Simply stated the car is driving along with it's passenger when it hits the brick wall that is randomly in the middle of the street. The brick wall applies a force to the front end of the car, stopping the vehicle. Because the man (who now probably dosn't have a licence) had no force aplied to him, he kept moving - just as the law of Inertia says that an object in motion will remain in motion. This is because of Momentum.

After dinner tonight ( we had lasagna!!! ) I was clearing two bowls stacked on top of each other (look at illustration) from the table. I didn't think and completely forgot all about what we had done in science. I grabbed the bottom bowl and pulled it, without applying a force to the top bowl. IInertia decided it didn't like my ipod, and now we're down one bowl and my ears are missing earphones.....
Now when I look back at it I'm appalled that I didn't see it coming. It is quite simple. The earth's gravity acted on the top bowl's mass, pulling it down. The only thing stopping it from smashing into the table was the botom bowl. When you remove the botom bowl, the top bowl falls down.

DUH!
I redid this example to clarify any missing points I may have left out do to my frustration. Though I used paper bowls, while I still have my skatebord.....
